Charles Reed Bishop, born on January 25, 1822, in Glens Falls, New York, was a prominent American businessman and philanthropist. He is best known for founding the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, a major institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing Hawaiian history, culture, and natural science. Bishop moved to Hawaii in the 1840s and made a fortune through various business ventures, including banking and trade. His most lasting legacy, the Bishop Museum, was established in 1889 with the goal of preserving the culture and heritage of the Hawaiian people.
Beyond his philanthropic efforts, Charles Reed Bishop was deeply involved in Hawaiian society, becoming a key figure in the social and economic life of the islands. He was married to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last direct descendant of the Hawaiian royal family, and upon her death, he dedicated much of his wealth to ensure the preservation of Hawaiian culture. Bishop passed away on June 7, 1915, at the age of 93, leaving a lasting imprint on both Hawaiian culture and philanthropy. His contributions continue to be celebrated, particularly through the Bishop Museum, which remains a vital institution to this day.
