Martha Reed Personal Life
Martha Reed (1922–2010) was an influential artist and fashion designer who left an indelible mark on Southwestern style. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, as a child when her father, renowned printmaker Doel Reed, joined Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University). After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1944, Martha worked at the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts before relocating to Taos, New Mexico, in 1953. There, she founded “Martha of Taos,” a boutique known for its distinctive broomstick skirts and velvet blouses inspired by Native American and Hispanic traditions. Her clientele included luminaries such as Greer Garson, Dennis Hopper, and President Jimmy Carter. Martha’s designs became emblematic of the region’s artistic heritage and were featured in exhibitions like “Martha of Taos: Broomstick Skirts, Concho Belts, and the History of Southwestern Fashion” at the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art.
